I used to always play 3rd person in racing games until Project Gotham Racing 3. In car view is fantastic if done right, its hard to go back to anything else. The camera movement bobbing around like the driver's head, with realistic viewing angles (not above the car or on the road), and the side/rearview mirrors with realtime reflection make it that much more immersive. IMO a major dissapointment that it was skipped in Forza 2, though I do understand that it would take a ton of extra work to map out the interior of every car. The only thing not I haven't seen announced for GT5 is multi monitor display capabilities... Sony had shown it with concept dual hdmi out on the PS3 but it didn't make the cut. Here's hoping for system link abilities!

Like poster #2 (Philip) I have never understood how anyone can feel they're driving a car when all they're getting is the view from the front bumper.

For me, it has to be the sitting-inside-the-car view and I simply wouldn't buy a serious car racing game that couldn't offer this.

BTW, I do play some non-serious racing games (Motorstorm, NFS: Carbon) and in those, I always shoose the 'behind car' view.

It is true that people can drive better with the bumper cam view, but i think it would be nice to have the in-car camera to see youself driving in your favorite car with a sweaty racing suit,a helmet and some dirty racing gloves and also experiencing the presure and the adrenaline rush that comes from every gear shifting, wheel turning, g-force .. ect.
I believe we all need a change of view!!

I think the in dash car would be a great addition and an awesome immersive experience. However, it's the least of upgrades I care about.

Matt,
I don't care about 1080p vs 720p. It's going to be hard for me to notice the difference at 60fps. But I do care about the other features... damage modelling and how it affects performance, better AI, online play and that darn Paint Shop. Has anyone seen the paint jobs that are possible with the new Forza?

Hope Polyphony are taking notes and will blow us all out with some amazing features. However, if it turns out to be just cockpit cams, I'm going to be disappointed.

Honestly, bumper-view is the least of GranTurismo's worries...

...ratchet up that AI so they're not all on the driving line, add damage to the vehicles, add an intricate paint program so folks can customize vehicles, and do all that in 1080p at 60fps with a minimum 8 vehicles on the road at once, and I'm in.

Seriously--Sony needs to consider ripping off Forza, since they're doing everything (but the track backgrounds) right.

My best times in GT4 & GTHD demo are with the bumper view, with the 3rd person view, I just messup every corner and hit every wall there is.

If they don't restrict the field of view unrealistically, I'm hopeful I'll do even better with the in-car view.

In-car view can make a big difference to how immersive it is. What would be even more immersive is to support something like the Track-IR. GTR on the PC with the Track-IR is awesome.

From what I've heard of the PlayStation Eye, it may even be possible for that to be used in a similar manner. Picking up head movements and translating them to PoV movements in the game should be relatively easy. If it has enough res, eye movements could be used for even greater effect.

All you have you do is play Dirt on the 360 with the in car view (the helmet cam) to know what you have been missing. I LOVE GT4 and eagerly await 5. This news just adds to the excitement.

I think it is a must for a 'sim'! And i think next-gen racegames must have at least a 'cockpit' view, a hood view, a bumper cam and a third person cam!!!
