[...] David Jaffe, the revered designer of God of War and the more recent, Calling All Cars, delivers some interesting banter via an interview with Three Speech. He says the difficulty of developing a title like Calling All Cars was the inability to rely “on old tricks” to alleviate the obviousness in areas with weaker game play. In regards to arcade titles, he says “if [the] core gaming isn’t working, you have nowhere to hide.” Near the tail-end of the interview, when asked if he has any more ideas planned for more downloadable games, Jaffe says his team is “in the design phase with two and three.” Hmmm … Calling All Cars 2 and 3? Or maybe a redesigned remake of the original Twisted Metal? Hey, we’d buy it. [...]

"We didn’t change the multiplayer, which everyone seems to be a fan of anyway, but in dingle-player, we toned down the AI ability to suck the criminal out of your car with the magnet."

Is "Dingle-player" a new Emmerdale farm gamer mode?

MEh... Calling all Cars is kind of a "meh" experience, so I don't know how I feel about him doing "online only" games... I like Jaffe, but I think his rational is a little ho hum at this point.

Who knows, maybe we'll see a PSN game from him that is just as compelling as God of War was or the Twisted metals were. Jaffe is extremely talented so I know Calling all cars isn't his best work.

"Snakeball owes something of a debt to the old Nokia phone classic Snake"

Threespeechers must be younglings :)
Snake was invented way back in 1977, Nokia phones merely reused the old classic.

Calling all cars is pretty fun. I definitely see the Crumb influence.. there is that cartoony 1920's feel to the game and the music.. like playing a Loony Tunes cartoon from that time period. The online is fantastic with online chat and easy (pay attention Motorstorm) to use room and game settings. It's a blast to play and is definitely one of the nicer purchases on the PSN.

Good interview, although you obviously held on to this for quite some time and now some portions of it are out of date. For example, you ask him about if the US version is finished, but it's been out for a week now.

Anyway, I've been playing it and enjoying it when not swearing at my television because the AI is so frustratingly difficult. In fact, even my girlfriend who has pretty much preferred the Wii up til now has been playing a lot of Calling all Cars and really ejoying it.

One thing I couldn't believe my eyes when I read it was this quote, "but in [s]ingle-player, we toned down the AI ability to suck the criminal out of your car with the magnet."

I would have hated to see what it was before, because right now it's insane. If an AI character has the magnet tool, you're screwed. They can flawlessly track you with it no matter what, something a human player can't do. It pisses me off every time it happens.
