Latest PLAYSTATION®3 Firmware Update Provides PlayStation®, PlayStation®2 and DVD Upscaling
Remote Play on PSP™(PlayStation®Portable) via the Internet and DLNA transfer of media content also enabled
London, 24 May 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.
The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically1 enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set. Not only are DVD movies enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.
In a comprehensive update to PS3’s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.
Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.
A host of other enhancements includes the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk drive or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers via USB connection.
PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.
Notes:
1. DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.
2. Use of Remote Play requires PS3 version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.
3. DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance. For more info on DLNA, please see http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/home
Cool!
No, awesome! I’m speechless.

Speaking of scaling, will the ps3 scale blu-ray movies to 720p yet? I remember some sites making its failure to do so a Big Deal when it first came out in the US, but I haven’t heard anything about it since.

WOW!! So impressed…..NOT!!
Where is the better XMB integration? Where are the improved PSN features we all want? Poor show Sony, great way of keeping us early adopters happy…

Fantastic! Well done Sony, you’re turning things around…
Comment by Tom Eccles — May 23, 2007 @ 3:24 pm
This begs the question… sort of !
Is the PS1 & PS2 upscaling a feature for EU PS3’s, i.e. ones with the Emotion engine removed or does this upscaling happen out of the backside of the emulation ( so to speak) ?
Comment by Neil — May 23, 2007 @ 3:27 pm
Glad this is out hope my older games look crystal clear now
Comment by Ashley — May 23, 2007 @ 3:28 pm
Does this mean that you can now access information that is stored on a network drive rather than it having to be directly attached? That would solved the FAT32/NTFS issues and means that it becomes dirt cheap to increase the storage capacity of your PS3 as network drives are far cheaper than 2.5″ SATA ones … or have I just got far too excited about this?
Comment by Fid — May 23, 2007 @ 3:29 pm
Yep, like Neil I would like to know if the PS1/PS2 upscaling is an upscaling of the buffer (resulting in a bigger but blurry version) or if it happens before (ie. sharp higher-res)?
Whichever it is, it should get rid of the black areas around the game, which should be a nice improvement on its own.

The killer app for me has to be the fact that you can be away from hom, or on holiday talking to someone, and thinking “oh I wish I could show you the photographs” … WELL NOW YOU CAN … just use your psp to access your ps3 via any wireless access point!
BRAVO SONY!!!

“just use your psp to access your ps3 via any wireless access point”
Means your PS3 must be “on”… if this plays well with f@h, this could further boost the number of PS3 contributing to f@h!
Comment by John — May 23, 2007 @ 3:50 pm
2.00 is still in the works Wormhole, but this 1.80 is in a way an “urgent” update, cause on the official forum, these features are asked by a lot of people and were not on the list for 2.00 ^^ so they listen to fans, make available that before 2.00 which was originally for “summer 07″.

Hi Folks!
I would like to see more details of how the Remote Play over the Internet works. I have a fixed IP address, so I am pretty sure I will have an easier time than some getting this working, but what about people who have dynamic IP’s from their ISP? How will they ever know how to access their PS3 is?. In addition to IP issues, there are always corporate firewalls and NAT problems to contend with, so don’t get carried away thinking your going to be be able to steam music and view videos etc from your PS3 to your PSP at your work desk…
Does anyone know of a list of compatible Epson printers?
The upscaling is welcome though! Now, where did I put that HD-TV…..

Any chance of allowing us homebrew Linux guys access to the RSX? If so I could then let my students free to hack on the system. Until we get a no-cost PS3 dev environment we’re restricted to hacking OpenGL/DX on a PC.

Good work, but only 1080p? I want 720p!
Comment by Ollie — May 23, 2007 @ 6:04 pm
Upscaling is “up to 1080p”, and includes 720p and 1080i.
And upscaling works fine via component for PS/PS2 games, but HDMI is a requirement for DVD upscaling (copy protection).

WooHoo, DLNA… Best part. I can finally see the media on my Twonkyvision UPnP/DLNA server.
Thanks Sony!!

A BIG BIG THANK YOU to Sony for listening to the consumer and starting to put some of the features we want in place.
All we now guys is:
Wallpaper - Minor but nice to have!
Blu-Ray scaling to 720p
XMB in game
Support for MP3 playlists
Get the above done and you’ll be well on the way to making the 360 look like a one trick pony.

Comment by Gabz — May 23, 2007 @ 6:58 pm
Hah! Still trying to catch up to a system that is $100 cheaper! Maybe the 360 doesn’t have a Blu-ray player but it has something as necessary as a scaler chip and have been watching movies at my TV’s native resolution from day one. Enjoy your 480p! LOL
Comment by perfectgun — May 23, 2007 @ 7:09 pm
This is couldn’t come at a better time.

Comment by ERIC — May 23, 2007 @ 7:57 pm
Anyone notice, that NONE of these features appeared on the Firmware v2.0 list.
This makes me believe even more that it’s true.
So once we get FW 1.8 tommorrow, and the planned V2.0 updates later this year, that pretty much addresses most peoples issues… Great work Sony, I’m sure the updates won’t stop there…
It’s seriously putting the 360 in the shade, as it took them18 months to get most of these features, you have done it in 6.
All we need now, is a decent store (the EU store is a total disgrace…)
Comment by Mark Gillespie — May 23, 2007 @ 9:32 pm
Kevling HDMI booo???
the majority of European HD sets all have HDCP capable Dvi which works flawlessly with the PS3 here and everywhere else…
Comment by mark — May 23, 2007 @ 9:41 pm
1080P to 720P scaling on Blu-Ray’s would be nice , the PS3 already plays 1080P video on 720P so there is no real problem there for sony to implement it.
THEY JUST NEED TO GET MORE PEOPLE PUSHING THE ISSUE!!!
Comment by mark — May 23, 2007 @ 9:47 pm

Comment by sam — May 23, 2007 @ 11:16 pm
Hope that it will upscale to 1080i/720p, not really bothered bout XMB access.
Comment by Jimmy — May 23, 2007 @ 11:20 pm
Man, I hope this isn’t just upscaling, and instead is proper progressive-scan conversion for DVDs and anti-aliasing and texture filtering for games. And I really, really hope we can turn off the upscaling if it causes problems for games.
And DLNA? They couldn’t find a protocol that normal people use or can install on their pc for free?
Comment by androvsky — May 23, 2007 @ 11:24 pm
Mark (comment 44)
I said ‘boooo’ because my TV doesn’t have HDMI, and there was no mention of component.
However, JC (comment 35) says that the upscaling will be fine over component for games, so I guess I’ll get SOMETHING out of this update then
(not that interested in remote play, don’t have DNLA equipment, don’t have an epson printer)
It’s still good news news for everyone else!
Thanks Threespeech for the info!

PS1/PS2/DVD Upscaling is great.

Comment by MCWHAMMER — May 24, 2007 @ 3:04 am
1. Upscaling does work over component for PS1/PS2 games.
2. HDMI (digital) is required by the MPAA for movies however. They don’t allow 1080 over analog component cables.
3. 24 Hz is now also supported for movie fans that must have the absolute best.
4. Ps1/PS2 game saves can be copied from the PS3 to memory cards. Previously you could only copy them onto the PS3..now you can get them off and take to your friends.
@perfectgun
1 . ha ha ha..bitter you got suckered with an original 360 when they knew all along they were releasing a still inferior to the PS3 HDMI 1.2 version. Saw you coming didn’t they. How many times have you replaced it..lol
2. Or wait you like paying MORE for your console actually -$250 over 5 years for those horrible laggy on-line games 6 player games your hosting on your console while we enjoy free 32 to 40 multi-player on-line with dedicated servers and no lag.
Plus all that extra money you pay for each controller charger and still no wi-fi, media slots, user replaceable HDD, blu-ray or streaming your media around the world on your PSP. Man did you get diddled. You paid more money for less capability and a console your scared to leave on for too long.
And that’s real 1080p with blu-ray not 480p, something you don’t have the choice to enjoy. And they don’t scratch like HD-DVD’s do and hey they hold more data for longer games and movies. But i guess since you couldn’t figure that out it would explain your purchase.
Maybe you should pay attention next time…you paid more to get less for a shoddy product - because a marketing guy lied to you and you believed him. DOH!

New firmware is always a good new.But ;y faourite improvements would be …:
1.- Please, Zoom mode on “Photos” (Why PSP can do it and PS3 not , it is incredible).Same words about change Theme or add new background from photo file.
2.- Compatibility improvement on PS2 titles (Europe exist too).
3.- Update of Internet browser because some web pages can´t be read.
4.- Movie files could be played sequentiall like somone said on Firmware 2.0,yes, finally it was a fake but everything was a very good idea .
Thanks and cheers from Valencia,Spain.

Backwards compatability improved (SSX3 now works for me).
Fantastic update. Shame they kept it so quiet, may have dampened the fire from the XBots somewhat.. 1 day of glory does not dampen 3 months of flaming…

Sadly, PS2 / PS1 uopscaling won’t work on my almost new SAMSUNG 720p/1080i lcd screen. When i select via GAME upscaling, the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds, an indicator that the feature doesn’t work with the TV, Funny but true. DVD upscaling is a decent improvement in picture quality though but FFXII looks the same, only it’s now FULL screen.
A slight dissappointment that.

Comment by sweetasman01 — May 25, 2007 @ 2:51 am
Dudes, I watched a DVD in upscaled mode last night! As someone else said, you have to set upscaling on in the settings menu. There are a couple of different types to choose from (?) I tried the “normal” upscaling. It upscaled my movie to 1080i (the maximum resolution my TV can support). Of course the picture doesn’t look as 1080i from Blu-ray, however, it’s a big improvement on standard definition from DVD. So I’m very pleased with this feature. Thank you Sony!

Just update the hypervisers framebuffer, and a quick DirectFB driver and we are away - full 3d for linux - no rsx hooks for scurvy pirates. again, please, please, please - do you want me to beg? (’cos you know i will!!)
Comment by Glyn Harris — Jun 21, 2007 @ 11:38 am
i would like to suggest a couple of features that i feel would really improve the ps3.
1. Allow the use of a webcam as a security device by remote play on the psp or PC like Location Free.
2. Enable printing over wireless / bluetooth. I have a smasung bluetooth photoprinter which i use with my Sony DSC T10 camera. Using a usb cable to connect a printer hmmm, i dont think many people want an ugly inkjet printer sitting forefront in their sittingroom along with the stunning PS3.
3. IT MUST ALLOW QUICKTIME PLAYBACK.. Surley i cannot be alone in wishing to view movie trailers from apples website full screen in HD, this i feel is a major drawback at the moment. This is also the problem with the Wii.
4. and my final comment, I have put all my music and photo collection on the ps3, this goes down very well with the wife.. however to save ps3 disk space i have attached an external usb 40 gb drive (which the ps3 can only use 32GB of! ) and when viewing the images or music files, there is no grouping options other than view all. This is very very annoying. I certainly do not wish to store all my music on the pc and link to it over the network, i simply want to turn on the ps3 and have everything i need searchable, sortable, on an external hdd. I look forward to this being improved grately.. there is not even the option to rename files…. or group photos…
I hope these comment fall on sonys ears, surely they must already be planning these features in future updates as these are obvious limitations at the moment.
On the other other hand, its a fantastic system .. Well done Sony so far..!

Well what really annoys me and that microsoft has gotten right with the 360 is the ability to download items in the background whilst watching films or playing games etc. Also the ability to download and automatically switch off the PS3 when finished. And why can’t they upscale 720p games to 1080p like the 360? The sole reason I got a FullHD TV is for the 1080p goodness only to discover PS3 doesn’t do the upscaling GRRRRR. Come on Sony get your act together.
Also another point what the hell is DLNA all about forget it it’s crap, just give us SMB support for christ sake.
Oh yeah and where are the demos ?

Do you guys also have it sometimes that when you start ff12 it starts blurry and you need 2 restart the game a few times 2 get it good?
Got a european ps3 with a european ff12 version off course =P
And btw the update still didnt fix the thingie that when you want 2 play blue ray disks on a normal tv that everything is black and white and crappy.

I don’t know if this was in version 1.80 or a later version, but I noticed that it’s scaling 1080p to 720p now.

Here it is:
“Downscaled output of Blu-ray Discs is now supported. When 720p is selected as the video output setting of the PS3â„¢ system, Blu-ray Discs that were recorded in 1080p or 1080i resolution can be played in 720p resolution.” Needless to say I was very happy to see this, as I have been waiting patiently for it (I have a 720P LCD HDTV and was forced to use 1080i or down to 480P before.) Now that they have scaling working partially, they’ll fix the 720P to 1080i issue…

You can always spot counterfeit goods or attempts to scam the public as the people involved can never spell correctly.
“frimeware”?
I bet you don’t even know what the most recent firmware revision number is!
