It seems that Sony really have been striving to make up for all the love lost with early compatibility fears. Whilst standing by their original comments that backwards compatibility will not be the focus going forward, the early launch of its compatibility site reveals that 1,782 of the 2,451 PS2 titles (in the SCEE region) available will work on your PS3.
The 1.6 firmware upgrade to be released at midnight on March 22 has now been finalised, and the number of games listed is the number that will be available to those owners who upgrade their system software after March 23.
See press release below for details of the compatibility site and 1.60 Firmware upgrade:
European PLAYSTATION 3 Compatibility Site Launches Early
Firmware upgrade at launch to implement connectivity to Folding@home, background downloading and internet browser enhancements
London, 20 March 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today launched the web site that will allow prospective PLAYSTATION®3 owners to see which of their PlayStation®2 titles are playable on the new European PS 3 hardware model.
The web site at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc lists those titles from the portfolio of PS2 titles available in the SCEE PAL territories that are playable on PS3.
“Our engineers have been working overtime, and have succeeded in delivering a significant number of playable PS2 titles for the European launch”, said David Reeves, President of SCEE. “We will be adding additional titles to this list in future firmware upgrades, but as we have made clear before, in the future our resources will be increasingly focused on developing new services and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, rather than on delivering PS2 backwards compatibility.”
New owners of a European PS3 will need to install the latest firmware upgrade to play the PS2 titles listed on the web site. The upgrade will be available at launch from midnight on 22nd March through the PLAYSTATION®Network, from www.PlayStation.com or, for those unable to access the internet, on a disc obtained from local Customer Services.
The latest system software upgrade (Version 1.60) will deliver features such as Folding@home connectivity, background downloading of content from the PLAYSTATION®Store, support for Bluetooth® keyboards and mice, and an optional full QWERTY on-screen keyboard for text entry.
The Folding@home project allows PS3 owners to connect to Stanford University’s Folding@home program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and many cancers. Using the power of the Cell Broadband Engine™, PS3 system can perform computer simulations for the Folding@home program ten times faster than your average home PC. Once PS3 system is updated to version 1.60, users can easily sign up to join the Folding@home program by clicking on the appropriate logo on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) under the Network icon. Then, when the PS3 system is left on and reaches idle mode, it will automatically begin a simulation and, once completed, send information back to a central computer(*1). Additional details about Folding@home are available at http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/.
Firmware Version 1.60 also delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. Up to 6 pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMB’s Network icon(2).
Firmware 1.60 also provides support for keyboards and mice enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology. Text entry is further expanded with the option to use a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard, in addition to the existing single tap keyboard. PS3’s built-in Web browser is also enhanced with the ability to zoom in to the optimal viewing size for the selected area of a Web page at the press of a button, as well as an optional tool for reducing flicker when the PS3 system is using interlaced video out (480i or 1080i).
(*1) To run the application automatically in idle state, PS3 must be connected to the network with both main power switch and power button turned on. Option setting must also be changed as this automatic feature is off at default.
(*2) Please refer to http://eu.playstation.com/help-support/ps3 for full functionality as some limitations may apply. The speed of download depends on bandwidth and network usage.
Good news - 1,845 titles is a lot more than the 1,000 we were originally promised. It’s 75% compatibility in fact, and I’m sure it’ll go upwards with future updates.
Yes, I’m not thrilled that it’s not the 98% compatibility of other regions, but 75% isn’t too bad.

Well the damage limitation excercise by Sony continues unabted. They decide to do the honourable thing by letting us know which PS2 games will be able to run on the PS3 4 days before launch. Just enough time for people to reconsider getting one as many really felt this was a deal breaker for them when considering getting a PS3.
1700+ titles is certainly heroic when compared to the XBox 360 who’s XBox titles were/are far fewer than that over a year after its launch.
The final bit of good news is that Sony are offering to provide CDs for people who have no internet access to upgrade their firmware.
All of this can only be regarded as a step in the right direction. However we can’t forget the fact that this is still short of the originally promised 100% compatibility as North America and Japan has. Any whay you slice it, Europe and Australasia are still getting a lesser product than the rest of the planet.

Uhhh, the 75% is the number of games in the list. And in the list there are quite a few games that arent “fully compatible” i.e. give problems when playing. They should have just waited to get it sorted before savinga few bucks with the emo engine.

Can someone let me know if FF 12 is compatible…. please…. my life depends on it!

Comment by Youiri — Mar 20, 2007 @ 1:56 pm
Well. This is good news and definitely the right thing to do by Sony - a solid overview of the current state of BC before the actual launch. Many, many thanks.
And 1800+ titles is something quite different from the “limited range” predicted a few weeks earlier. Huge kudos to all the software engineers involved who had to give up on sleep for a while there in order to cook up firmware update 1.60 ;).
But.
I’ve hopped over to the BC site and apparently, many of these playable titles will have “issues” to some degree. Of everything listed, only titles with three blocks next to them will play without noticable problems (as far as the engineers have researched, of course). Titles with one block have “occasional problems” whereas those with two blocks suffer from “clear problems”. I would have ordered things on the “problem scale” a little different, but oh well.
Anyway, I did a quick scan of the list, looking for my personal favourites and noticed a few interesting tidbits:
* Almost all the highend franchises which made the list (Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Okami, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, PES, Fifa, …) have one or two blocks besides their respective titles.
* The SCEE franchises (Shadow of the Colossus, ICO, God of War) work great, as expected, phew. Including the still PAL-unreleased God of War 2.
* Tekken, Project Zero and GTA seem to work pretty good with only 3 and 1 block entries.
* Sadly missing from the list: Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 3 and Gran Turismo 4.
The first tidbit above raises a question: what exactly can we expect from one and two block entries? Do “occasional problems” (one block) mean that the game crashes every once in a while, or that polygons are occasionally rendered with graphical errors? Do “clear problems” (two blocks) mean that you get graphical errors all over the place, or that cutscenes go crazy, or that the game will boot, but it’s pretty much impossible to get past the title screen?
It would be great if more insight could be provided there.
I hope future firmware updates can further improve the emulation accuracy of the mentioned AAA franchises. Either way, thanks again for taking the right course of action, Sony!

Edit pertaining to my previous post (14): At the time of writing, there’s a small communications problem on the site.
The UK version of the site (and all other, english versions) says:
two blocks = some minor issues
one block = noticeable issues
The Belgian (Dutch) version of the site (which I initially consulted) says the exact opposite. Further inspection shows that all other non-English versions say the same thing (German, Luxemburg, Denmark, Italy, …). Ehm… so which versions are correct, then? Personally I hope the english version is, as that seems the more logical classification.
Comment by VMerken — Mar 20, 2007 @ 2:17 pm
Correction for post 18: Ehm… my previous previous post appears to be 15, not 14. Sorry about that.

Comparing my list of games with Sony list doesn’t get me anywhere near 75%.
I must admit this has been a skilful manipulation of turning negative news into something positive. i.e. 100% of PS2 games won’t work as opposed to only 25%.
Thankfully Project Zero, Ico, SOTC are on the list. Shame about RES4, Okami, FFXII, Silent Hill 2.
Comment by rogerb — Mar 20, 2007 @ 2:31 pm
i hope this message gets to the Sony Superiors,
Why are all the “exclusive” games going to the 360? Was looking forward to Devil May Cry but now i has this gut feeling that, as it is a multi platform game, it will not use the PS3′S undoubted potential to the fullest.
Please announce more games, so come this Friday, me buying a PS3 will be even sweeter
Comment by superman — Mar 20, 2007 @ 2:36 pm

Bazlurgan, FF XII should boot in your Firmware 1.60 PS3 - at this point, it’s merely unsure whether or not it will run with “some minor” or “noticeable” issues.
Incidentally, the PSOne BC list for PS3 is - while less important as the PS2 BC list, sure - a bit disappointing personally: Resident Evil 2 and 3, Tomb Raider, Fear Effect, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Final Fantasy VII are painfully absent *sigh*.

yay Sony! Great job. I’d have to say this is great support given that the EE is removed. The remaining 25% should hopefully be done soon and this BC issue can be laid to rest. As a PS3 owner, I’d have to say.. I haven’t played any of my old PS2 games since getting a PS3, only spending some small amount of time on Okami since it became “Greatest Hits” and waiting for God of War 2 to do the same. But, nonetheless this is great for those who still wants to play PS2 games in the UK.

to all those trumpeting Sony’s ‘achievment’ of making so many titles BC: Sorry, it’s still a very poor list.
The fact that it has more games BC than the 360 is a moot point. Sony from day 1 stated that the PS3 would have almost 100% BC with the previous PS generations. To take such a direct dump on the european market and go back on a key pledge is pretty awful…. and to trumpet this list as good news is just sad, very sad.
There will be a lot of disapointed PS fanboys come friday, hooking up their gimped console using the included composite cable expecting a revolution. Even sadder when they try playing that copy of GTA:SA or PES6 they hung on to… Remeber, the HD era doesn’t start until Sony says so

“Sony from day 1 stated that the PS3 would have almost 100% BC with the previous PS generations”
And then people complained about the cost. And Sony had to prioritize. Either 100% BC, or 75% and have more people actually buy it.
Don’t blame Sony, blame the cheapskates who aren’t buying a PS3 even though it’s only $100 more than the 360

I conducted my own count of the BC list and I don’t even get close to 1.782 games. In fact, I counted only 1.240.
I think you guys counted all the different print runs as well as the different language versions as unique games. Some games on the list are listed up to 9 times because of different manufacturing batches. If you omit all those double entries, you should get around 1.240 unique titles that work…
Anyone doubting this number, please be my guest and count the games yourself.

I hope that SONY takes a two-pronged approach to future ps2 compatibility firmware in the PS3:
.
# Promoting more ps2 games from ‘non-working’ to a ‘working’ state.
… AND …
# Improving the experience of the current poorly-emulated ‘working’ games.

Personally, I wish to see new support for these games:
* BLACK
* MANHUNT
* MORTAL KOMBAT: DEADLY ALLIANCE
* OUTRUN 2006
* POOL PARADISE
* SNIPER ELITE
.
And improved emulation of:
* HAUNTING GROUND
* SHADOW OF ROME
* PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE TWO THRONES
* GTA: SAN ANDREAS

The real insult is that Sony only save $27 a unit by removing the Emotion Engine. Considering that we are paying waaaay more than the US and Japan, making a big chunk of our old games useless or “playable with issues” for the sake of $27 is a bit of a slap in the face. Why not offer a fully BC version for £15 more or something?
Comment by danno — Mar 26, 2007 @ 8:31 am
As for Europe getting an “inferior” version of the PS3, Sony never intended to include the EE+GS hardware for *all* PS3 versions in the first place and just go software emulation. The problem was that the emulation software was not yet ready at the time of the Japan and US launch of the PS3 so they included the EE+GS chip to provide backward compatibility. In fact the next production runs of the Japan and US PS3’s will see the chip removed and go emulation just as well.

I packed up my PS3. I only play Soccer and none of my PS2 games could play on my PS3. I still use my PS2 to play games and the PS3 has been useless cos SONY has not been considerate.
I have repeatedly upgraded with software from Sony, upto upgrade ver 1.92 and yet nothing good has happened. It all looks like a wasted purchase, considering that a friend had to help me buy the PS3 from UK to 9ja on release in Europe.
I hope Sony would address the issue once and for all to ensure that we do not purchase this gaming machine for nothing. If they are serious about emulation, they would program a totally compartible software at once and make everybody happy.
I am totally fed-up. It’s all fuck-up arrangement. It’s a shame for Sony to not live upto the promised 100% compartibility.
