It’s not new but people here at Three Speech are still intrigued by it. First glance it appears to be a collaboration between Coca Cola and GTA… a closer look would reveal that it’s actually some clever animation from Smith & Folkes/Nexus London. Is this the next step for advertising? What do you think?

Nice video & great concept, but very old. It first surfaced on YouTube in August last year.

Yeah Topov, they do that site about 15cm above you.
It’s a brilliant video.

They do that site? I mean, they do say that. Christ!
Comment by Soong — Jan 29, 2007 @ 8:03 pm
When I first saw it some time ago, I really thought it was GTA for PS3 or something like that, until I saw the Coca-Cola bit.
Cool video by the way.
ps: Did you guys recieve my email? I’m not sure if it got sent in the end. :S

It’s great animation. What the F***k are you lot going on about? and bollocks to brands hijacking popular youth culture when they should be diverting money from their mainstream advertising saturation campaigns into activity that says more about them. Cut your advertising budget in half and put money into local communities, facilities, playgrounds, amenities. Support not Hijack. nurture talent and stop filling the pockets of the advertisng industry, who know that TV advertising isn’t as effective as it used to be, but are still hoping the bubble won’t burst for atleast 10 more years. We don’t need to see a commercial more than 3 times, after that it starts to get annoying. At least Sony are starting to hint that they recognise that:
media Guardian 29/1/07
Quoting Alan Duncan Sony Computer Entertainment UK’s marketing Dirtector:
“TBWA’s role has certainly changed”, he admits. “but the role of advertising agancies generally in the digital world has changed too. The focus now is more on strategy and planning, and creating a sense of identitiy and what a brand stands for. traditional ad campaigns, however, still have their place.”
For the time being anyway.

Reading behind the lines
What that really means is that the advertising industry should be bloody shit scared, because brands are finally starting to admit that they don’t need to spend so much on traditional media, especially TV, to build credibility and awareness for a brand or product. Playstation would be better spending their money developing games that are really going to push the boundaries of gameplay and entertainment, instead of spunking millions on TV.

Sorry about the spelling. Director not dirtector (although that does sound like a great new word i accidentally invented - suggested definitions are welcome) and other obvious ones I can’t be arsed to apologise for. Must use that spell check thing and drink less.

For one, the ad was just alright. For two, I’m really not sure that using the GTA brand in such a way falls under fair-use - it’s not really a spoof or satire, so… And for three, semi-official? What does that even mean? You’re either on the Sony payroll or you aren’t. There’s no real “semi” about it. This doesn’t need to be a repeat of alliwantforxmasisapsp.com. Just come out and say, “Hey. Yeah, this is a Sony sponsored blog. Talk about PS3 and have fun.” I doubt anyone would really care. The insulting part is when Sony has a marketing firm, like Ramp Industry here, create something for them, and then try to pass it off as if it’s just a fan site.

frank…how long have you been reading this site? if it’s any more than a week you’ll realise that there’s no confusion to its legitimacy…if you’re that concerned try visiting some of the previous comments that were as equally as tiring. The fact is that it’s offered us a way through to Sony that we’ve never had previously, new information and somewhere to chat about the PS3 in the hope that some of our points may be taken notice of… let’s leave the site to discussing more pressing questions like WILL WE GET A COPY OF BOND WITH OUR PS3….PLAYSTATION???
As for the useage of GTA… agree. Think it’s outrageous the way Coke have jumped on the band wagon and attempted to cash in on another brands heritage… haven’t they already bought up half of second life as well?!!!

I can only guess that Rockstar got a few bucks for letting Coca Cola do this commercial

take heed sony!…
“A company called SplitFish claims that it has solved the problem regarding the PlayStation 3’s lack of rumble functionality. The company claims that its “dynamic force feedback system” can be used with the PlayStation 3’s SIXAXIS controller without interrupting its motion sensing abilities. Its low power force feedback technology is called SensorFX and uses no moving parts to produce the feedback. Its feedback will work across the entirety of the controller, allowing feedback to be focused on one side or the other if necessary.”
IF sony DO keep in touch with this sight..please bear this in mind!! (we all secretly love rumble)
also i dont think it infringes on those greedy bastards patent over at immersion
Comment by seedaripper — Jan 31, 2007 @ 8:40 am
Frank. I think Sony are being fairly open that the this is part of their marketing for PS3. Sony has ‘no official’ editorial control, but there is no doubt that they will be monitoring the feedback.
Akisame. I don’t think Rockstar would have sold out to Coca-cola. the GTA franchise is too adult and violent for Coca-cola to want to get too close, just close enough to ride on the back for a while. It’s not good for the industry when huge brands wanting to target kids with fizzy drinks do a spoof of one of the most violent games on the market, therefore recognising and drawing more attention to the fact that the vast number of owners of the 18cert GTA games, are kids. The government is already planning to spunk millions on an advertising campaign aimed at educating parents that games have age restrictions. Don’t they realise that the parents , in the main, already know, they’re just crap parents. I guess the positive side of this government incentive is that atleast they are starting to recognise (it’s only taken 20 years), that games arn’t just for kids.
