Speaking to SmartHouse.com.au, the Vice President of Technology for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Paul Holman, said a PS4 is in the pipeline for 2010. Between then and now, Sony plans to introduce a series of firmware upgrades that will give the PS3 more media centre capability and allow for the introduction of third party applications and hardware “Such as interactive controllers” similar to the Nintendo Wii.

He doesn’t say it will be out 2010, but “not until atleast 2010″ This probably means 2011, 2012. The PS2 has been out since late 2000 until late 2006 before the PS3 came. The PS4 is probably going to have somewhat the same cycle.
So, 2011 - 2012 is more realistic. Which is good I think. I do not want a console every 4 years like microsoft did with xbox. (2001-2005) I want the initial hardware investment to last longer than that. MS 4 years with xbox is very very little, especially with such limited backwards compability.

I agree with Martin above. 2010 is very unlikely, in my opinion. The PS3 is not even being launch until 2007 in Europe and Australia, and other parts of the world. To think a PS4 will be released in only 3 years after that is inconceivable, especially for Sony. Now Microsoft, I believe that they will have a new console out by then, if not sooner.
Speaking of PS3 and availability, looks like mine should be on it’s way within the next two weeks, if not within 24 hours. I was able to secure an online order from Gamestop today, the order status for the PS3 says usually ships within 24 hours. The listing itself said it was scheduled to ship on 12/15/06. For those reading this, it’s already too late as they removed the link, but I believe it was up for at least 15 minutes.

Expect a totally different system from now in a years time if the PSP is anything to go by. Sony have show us they’re willing to support the format.
2010 seems a little early to me too, I’d go with 2013
