A journalist student called Brad Flora dropped us a line, telling us about a photo essay of a PS3 camp-out last week.
“Last Thursday I spent the night interviewing the gamers/would-be profiteers waiting for the PS3 outside various electronic stores in Chicago. Some friends snapped pictures and we’ve pulled it all together into a photo essay that’s getting some great response so far.”
All the reports of shootings, robberies and stabbings made things look pretty bleak last week but here’s the story of a group of gamers led by a railroad engineer named “Angel”, fed by an investment banker who bought himself a spot in line and brought together by pirated DVDs and touch football. While everyone else was struggling, they kept warm, had fun, and snagged their new consoles.”
“This is an in-depth look at how one of these campouts works and what makes for a good one.”

It’s strangely touching to see such a niche community coming together. Only really happens every 5 years.

And as I live in the UK I’m interested to see if the community pulls together over here as well. Would be nice to see the spirit spread overseas.

Do you think people would get that fervent over here?? Not sure. I think we treat the whole gaming experience differently

I agree it’s a very different atmosphere. However that said, down here in Plymouth for the PSP launch there was a lot of people gathered and we were having a good chat and everyone was getting on great (no fake shootings). Sure, we weren’t qued up for days but that maybe because the pre-order system is done differently over here.
