REMOTE SIGN UP DELAY

17 Nov

We’ve been trying to find out what’s going on regarding being able to register usernames online via the PlayStation Store (we were originally told this would be in operation worldwide today)

All we’re being told at present is that the launch of this service has now been delayed - and that a new date will be confirmed shortly. We’ll keep you posted.

  1. Typical, just bloomin’ typical. C’mon Sony, get it together and look out for your most important consumers - the Europeans!

    Comment by Zoidy — Nov 17, 2006 @ 3:32 pm

  2. Keep joking with the europeans and then cry if we piss on your PS3… we could be spending the money on computer upgrades that would surpass easily the PS3….

    Comment by Areallytiredeuropean — Nov 17, 2006 @ 3:57 pm

  3. Ah well, that had to happen… funny how SONY does great products but then sort of fumbles when it comes to occidental markets… just look at the lame PS3 online manual or at the lame icons for your PS3 ID…
I juts hope nobody in the States will register the ID I chose, ie lame_ID_that_sucks_6885

  4. Typical SONY… delays delays and more delays. Please make sure to have them in stock by December 1st. I want next gen THIS YEAR!

  5. Oh look… something sony annouced about the PS3 launch wasn’t actually destined to happen. Who would have thought it?

At least we can say they are being VERY consistent with the message they are giving to the consumer.

    Comment by jamie — Nov 17, 2006 @ 4:45 pm

  6. God forbid they have a delay. You people need to learn how to be patient and stop with the whiny dramatics. Deal with it, it’s not like the majority of you even have a PS3 yet.

  7. i’m disappointed but hey, keep the faith people…

    Comment by Gul — Nov 17, 2006 @ 5:10 pm

  8. This is so unfair, and no i will not stop whining, when the launch in europe is 4-5 months later then japan and usa then i bloody want to be sure my normal online name isen’t taken! it’s only fair.

    Comment by omg! — Nov 17, 2006 @ 5:25 pm

  9. RE comment 6:

Why should we have to be patient with such a huge company when they are clearly unable to deliver simple things like an online regstration?

Micrsosofts web-based gamertag registration works just fine…. and did so before 360 was even launched.

    Comment by jamie — Nov 17, 2006 @ 5:30 pm

  10. ones again sony is having fun of european player one day it’ll really bring problem to sony, Delay problem is not your fault right but isn’t it strange that you always have delay problem ?

  12. I see a 8800GTX in the horizont, same pricing of the PS3 60GB and beats the PS3 RSX processor ;)

Hurry up sony else you wont make any party here, unless u invite some bums to go and party with you …

    Comment by Areallytiredeuropean — Nov 17, 2006 @ 6:30 pm

  13. delayed as in “awaiting final approval” or as in “oh crap! we’re not done with it yet!”?

    Comment by ashram — Nov 17, 2006 @ 6:53 pm

  14. Pitiful, typical Sony, never doing anything right, stupid asses, had way over a year to do all this shit, instead they made the George Foreman grill run hotter and quieter, congratulations you dumb asses @ Sony, dickwads.

  16. Oh no! Someone is going to take your “John” or “Sally” screen name? The truth is, not that many people have a PS3 today, and they will probably have this service open within a weeks worth of time… no more PS3s will have been sold by then. Just by the time difference, a few thousand people are going to register their SN before Europe anyway, so whats the big deal? Your precious sn. wont be gone…

On the other hand… Sony should have delievered.

    Comment by Kamesen — Nov 17, 2006 @ 7:20 pm

  17. Hopefully they will get it all sorted out soon.

    Comment by Stephen — Nov 17, 2006 @ 7:32 pm

  18. i wouldnt mind the wait if they DIDNT ANNOUNCE THE DATES beforehand. Theres a big difference between a wait and a missed deadline, a missed deadline makes people angry.

    Comment by Kurt Cobain — Nov 17, 2006 @ 7:36 pm

  19. Didn’t Europe get to pre-register/register(which one?) usernames for the PS3 as compensation for the delay?

    Comment by Azazil — Nov 17, 2006 @ 8:28 pm

  20. Loyal Sony fans were promised the PS3 this november, but the promise was broken. We understand why.

The PC registration of SignOn names was there as a service to Sony fans who were shafted. However, somehow they drop the ball, and fans screwed again.

As a Brit, i dont mind admiting that i woke up early to register. Only to be let down, without any info.

    Sony. Come on!
Dont make promises you cant keep - better to not make them.

And start respecting European fans by giving them some love.

  21. i think you guy’s are over reacting just a tad.

    Comment by Urban — Nov 17, 2006 @ 9:24 pm

  22. Why couldn’t they at least RESERVE the usernames people are using for PS2 online to prevent this sort of thing from happening? That way those that are already registered will have their handles protected from being taken!

    Comment by Solid Snake — Nov 17, 2006 @ 10:48 pm

  23. lol stop whining man bunch of babies lol So me where Sony promised you a PS3. :)

    Comment by AmericanNinja — Nov 17, 2006 @ 11:09 pm

  24. All the people that say “stop whining” are probably those that already have their nickname secured, i don’t wanna be named anything with a number in it because sony can’t keep their promise.

    Comment by omg! — Nov 17, 2006 @ 11:48 pm

  25. Yeah if they were the ones waiting for Ps3 they would probably create some stupid excuse and attack japan oil or conquer europe because they are making nukes ! Evil them…

    Comment by Areallytiredeuropean — Nov 18, 2006 @ 12:34 am

  26. Nother *ANOTHER* “Lets piss off the Euro guys..” Sony, surely you’ve learned your lesson about promises.. and then breaking them? Will we ever learn!

Personally, I’ve had it with Sony now.

I seriously doubt your “March” release date now.. and to think I was giving you the benefit fo the doubt!

    Enough is ENOUGH!

    Comment by Mark Freeman — Nov 18, 2006 @ 12:34 am

  27. Well. Everyone seems very angry.

First of all, i doubt Sony will EVER have a PC registration system for the PS3 online system, you’ll just have to wait till you get a shiny new PS3 on March 7th!

Secondly, i dont care, because i have middle names, two infact. And when i signed up for hotmail about 4 years ago i managed to get myfullname@hotmail plus myfirstnameandmiddleinitialsandsurname@hotmail

And i’m going to guess that hotmail had a few more customers 4 years ago than Sony will have ps3 customers in March.

So for crying out loud, its no big deal! (Apart from common people that have no middle names, they’re screwed. Oh, and people that like ‘nicknames’. But your just sad. Stop hiding behind a name that makes you sound MUCH cooler than you actually are)

    Comment by James Banks — Nov 18, 2006 @ 2:33 am

  28. I live in the U.S. and have a pre-order for the PS3 (it should be arriving before the holiday - I can wait) and I definitely have to feel bad for the Europeans on this post. All of the privileged folks in the U.S. should just shut up and let the Europeans vent on this one.

First of all, it’s a true sign of loyalty to accept the fact that you aren’t getting the console because you were de-prioritized — yet, you still want to secure an online personality. I don’t really think it’s asking much.

Secondly, for a company like Sony, this doesn’t seem like something that’s incredibly technically challenging to do. Perhaps instead of spending so much money creating a flash-intensive website that most folks aren’t going to visit (we’re going to Joystiq, 1up.com, kotaku and ps3fanboy.com for slightly less biased reviews and features), why not make sure that this tiny thing works so that the Europeans that you’ve let down (and even the Americans who’ve been loyal but just can’t swing $599 right now) will preserve their identity online?

The folks overseas have a valid gripe. Shame on you, Sony.

  34. You guys sure are laying the guilt trips on thick. Do you throw tantrums and do that to your parents when they don’t give you what you want the day you want it? Babies…

It’s not a case of “what we want the day we want it”, it’s a case of “the bone we were thrown on the day we were promised it”. Being able to register a PSN handle is clearly just a sop compared to the lack of PS3 in Europe, but it would have been better than nothing and they had previously promised that we could register at US launch day. Now we have discovered that it is just yet another of their promises that Sony have broken, so it’s not a case of a tantrum, it’s a genuine complaint.

    Comment by Danj — Nov 19, 2006 @ 5:23 pm

  35. I’m an avid Sony Fan. I have the Bravia, the VAIO, the PSP, the PSX/PS2 the Sony Ericsson etc. I love the Playstation/2 as I grew up with it and my favourite games are for the console (GTA/Final Fantasy etc.)

When the store GAME (in the UK) started advance registration I was one of the first. Even got questionnaires though the post from GAME about possible Sony linked TV deals with the PS3 at launch and my opinions. My hype was great

Then it came crashing down when I heard of the delay (strangely though I wasn’t surprised) and instead of my £500 going on a PS3 I fell for the Xbox 360. I won’t deny I will buy a PS3 but now with this failure to build a basic registration site .. anyone could do it with .php software .. I fear Sony will so a ‘PSP’ and further delay the European launch until Sept. ‘07.

Show us avid European fans some love Sony, just a little please?

    Comment by KJ — Nov 19, 2006 @ 5:49 pm

  36. “James Banks” - what a fool. It’s common sense NOT to use your real name when playing online, or posting on websites- and companys like Sony generally recommend you don’t use your real name, but an alias instead. Otherwise you leave yourself open for abuse.
It’s far more intelligent to come up with some unique and original “tag”. “James Banks” obviously knows not what he is talking about, and has no sense of individuality or originality. Or common sense.

    Comment by Bentley — Nov 20, 2006 @ 2:32 pm

  37. Surely for people that don’t have a PS3 but know a PS3 owner in the states could they get their American friend to register their username using the console?

As for other people who dont, this would be a good time to make friends with loads of Americans!

    Comment by James Banks — Nov 20, 2006 @ 4:05 pm

  38. Great $ony shafts us again, What next the european ps3’s wont have any online service?

    Comment by Mat1983 — Nov 20, 2006 @ 4:26 pm

  39. shortly is normally a few hours to a day or two….it’s been over 3 now…..considering this is supposed to be sony’s mouthpiece…. news is very slow….

    Comment by ashram — Nov 20, 2006 @ 7:21 pm

  40. @ Bentley

Actually i do know what i am talking about. As i’ve been using my real name on many sites for many years and have had no such abuse. The reason why, because there are six BILLION people on this planet and i’m not the only James Banks in the world. As for originality, i tend to think my name is more original (though not unique) than some of the other tags out there. eg Metal_nut_2006 etc)

And even if i were to get abuse, abuse is abuse, whether its with a fake name or real. It just proves my point that people are hiding behind these fake names just so they can dish out harsher abuse than in real life.

    Comment by James Banks — Nov 21, 2006 @ 9:23 am

  41. wow, i bet they let this die…. wouldn’t be the 1st time… sony’s great at ignoring things….

    Comment by ashram — Nov 21, 2006 @ 11:14 pm

  42. Uh, Bentley - perhaps YOURE the fool. Or maybe just a punk ass biatch who’s either a) too ashamed of his name to use it in playing, b) too much of a pussy to use his real name, c) too trained as a non-thinking individual to do whatever the corporate shills tell him to or d) all of the above.

“Don’t use your real name” is something corporations tell you so that dumb asses who give their bank account and ss# out over IM don’t have a chance to get ganked and end up blaming Sony. If James Banks is proud of his name, what the hell business is it of yours if he wants to use it? Whatever he wants to reserve as his gamer tag, the point is that Sony lied and failed him. This issues has absolutely nothing to do with what he wants to call himself.

    Comment by Darren James — Nov 22, 2006 @ 6:35 am

  43. Thank you Darren James for your support on this matter.

I would however like to backtrack on a couple of things i said originally. (Yes, JAMES BANKS is back tracking).

Firstly, i don’t think people that have no middle names are common. That was just an off the cuff remark that i made. I infact have family members that i know and love that have no middle names.

Secondly, i am not against fake names. I am just simply questioning the very reason why we need to use them. Bentley is simply wrong when he says that “they are more original/secure”

And for the people that (quite rightly) say that i am straying off topic, i stand by my original statment that Sony won’t do ANYTHING about this and we’ll just have to wait.

I also stand by the point i made that it is NOT A BIG DEAL, and that this controversial story about Sony will be forgotten as soon as people buy a console in March, or April, or May and so on and realise that, in 99.99% of cases, their username is intact!

    Comment by James Banks — Nov 23, 2006 @ 12:17 am
