"Q: But surely, you can only really tell the difference between Blu-ray and HD-DVD on a progressive-scan TV?"

There's no difference to see when both formats are doing the best they can. Both support the same codecs and same resolution, it's only the storage media that's different. The bitrate difference Kutaragi mentioned is not something which you can actually see affecting the picture quality any time soon, if ever.

At the moment there is a difference to see: HD DVD titles generally look better.

Did Kutaragi mean that current CPUs used in PCs are not fast enough for Blu-ray playback? Funny. He's welcome to visit and witness my HTPC playing BDs perfectly :)

Textures aren't the only things that can be compressed and decompressed very efficiently off-disc in order to decrease the time spent actually getting the data off. I picked textures as a suitably simple example...

There are a good few lossless compression schemes around now for a multitude of media formats (i.e. image, sound, video); making a deal of being able to keep things in an uncompressed state when the speed of getting stuff from the disc is an issue is madness.

Don`t look at the competition?

-I seem to remember developers close to Sony being very surprised at E3 when Sony suddenly...waggle waggle...

According to them, there were no such thing in the controller just three weeks earlier...

@Dan

He didn't speak about textures.
Non-compression could be sound, video etc. Don't jump the gun and put words in his mouth.

"...allowing non-compression...": Let's just forget that compressed textures isn't just about storage space, but also about getting information off the disk faster shall we... uncompressed textures *is* *not* *good* when you have a lot of them to get off the disk, especially hi-res ones! Stupid comment to make...
